This has led to overrepresentation of males in these positions. Much as it is very clear that traditionally nursing was associated with the female gender, their male counterparts have dominated positions of authority in the same field (Dockery 2004). Ironical as it may be, it is still unsurprising since almost all positions of authority in the economy and the social setting is associated with the male gender. Maybe it is because of the traditional belief males are better managers that females, which is not always the case (Driscoll et.al 2005).According to a workforce publication by AIHW, the supply of employed medical practitioners in Australia increased from 323.2 to 355.6 full-time equivalent practitioners per 100,000 populations between 2008 and 2012, which reflected a 16.4% rise in employed practitioner numbers (Keleher et.al 2007). Women improved their share of the field by c0ntri8buting more than 38% of the workforce compared to the 34.1% of the previous year (AIHW 2012).This is a contrast since most of the employees are expected to be females, as it is a filed perceived to be formerly female dominated. Male nurses mostly covered the top managerial positions (Dockery 2004).There is another possible explanation as to why more males occupy these positions than females. Most of the positions of authority are awarded according to level of academic achievement as well as the experience. Clearly, the female nurses Statistics show that males are more ambitious to achieve more academically, which makes them be able to secure positions of authority (Dockery 2004).
